Fundamental purpose of Agility

Today we can reliably achieve results faster than ever. Humanity has become much more efficient. The more efficient everything is — the faster the world changes. During the current technological boom, one thing is constant — change. Adaptability is more important than ever. Competitive advantage depends upon ability of organisation to maximise the potential of all people, not just the chosen few. Increasing the empowerment and autonomy of employees is not an option — it is essential. Leadership behaviors from the industrial age are ruinous today.

We learned that stress can be different and positive stress is healthy. People are playing intensive video games for free. Every generation has unique motivators and challenges. Our new reality requires free minds and much more awareness. With only “I” shape employees it’s hard to pivot. People are required to fly high and dive deep. Energy shouldn’t be wasted on resistance, which is natural when people are forced without any freedom to decide. Leadership behavior is required in non-leadership roles. Teams have to shape themselves and auto-correct the course without unnecessary escalations to make an organization effective. Switching off critical thinking and blindly relying on the past experience is not an option.   The role of leaders shifted from command-and-control to inspiration and support.  Commonly used command-and-control practices, coming from Frederick Taylor (1911, “The Principles of Scientific Management”), have to be unlearned. Instead of committing to executing the initial plan, teams should focus on the value of the goal, and continuously improve plans and approaches by learning, innovating and adapting. Oftentimes today instead of the triple constraints (scope, budget, time), we aim to flex the scope, while keeping the budget (people) constant. Controlling innovative projects through a schedule isn’t worth the time spent on it. Facilitation of the project execution is done through coaching teams to be better at agile and focusing on building a culture, where people want to thrive.

Activ8or.com has some tools for that.

Enjoy!
